TIL "Highway hypnosis" is an altered mental state in which a person can safely drive an automobile great distances with no recollection of having consciously done so. It is a manifestation of automaticity, where the conscious and subconscious minds are able to concentrate on different things.

I came here to say this. 100%. Anytime I do an endurance race in any Gran Turismo game, I'm aware for the first 10 minutes or 10 laps and then I go on autopilot. Pun intended. It's crazy how the mind works.

Fun fact, this is know as being in a Flow state. There's a good amount of research that's been done on this. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology)

I think that's a little different. Flow is more like being intensely focused on doing something, as if it's the only thing that exists. This is kinda opposite, in that you kind of ignore the task you're doing and don't remember doing it afterward.

Flow state is not being hyper focused, but it's a state of mind that typically happens WHILE you're doing something that requires intense focus.

When you’re giving your fullest attention to an activity or task that you are incredibly passionate about, singularly focused on, and totally immersed in, you may find yourself creating the conditions necessary to experience a flow state of mind. The mind’s usual chatter begins to fade away, placing us in a non-distracted zone. The feelings that would consume you under normal circumstances (inhibition, hunger, fatigue, or aches and pains) melt away, and all that matters is your dedication to your craft.

The flow mental state is generally less common during periods of relaxation and makes itself present during challenging and engaging activities. According to Csikszentmihalyi, “The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… the best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” To that end, engagement and concentration are key in achieving flow state.

I get this when mountain biking at trail centers, it feels like the downhill sections last for only seconds but in reality they can last for a couple of minutes

Uh, you young pups dont remeber endurance races on gt2. Set a weight on x button, ride the side and profit after 3 hours. Mitsubishi 3000 GT awd. 1100hp. Easy money.

Oh, but I do. I've played GT since the beginning. And here's a bonus TIL for those that didn't know: The Mitsubishi 3000 GT and the Dodge Stealth are the same car.

Same frame before unibodies. Not the same engine, twin turbos, or mounting brackets for the engine. 300z engines also tranfer directly to the 3000 GT, not avengers. Their firewall comes up on the left side because of placement of a single turbo, so no. Take your downvote outa here.
