My Astro/Ocean teacher was fresh out of college so he was great, I miss him

49

u/manrata 8d ago

The cause is oddly enough that they are taught to teach it correctly, or are themselves unable to grasp why people can’t grasp the entire concept, when only being taught a fraction at a time.

They need to dumb it down, teach it simpler, then expand later, and only at the end join the entire concept together.

Teachers need to learn to teach, it’s a skill in itself, and teachers don’t necessarily need to be the most knowledgable on the subject, rather the ones who can translate it to people who need to learn it.

34

u/GREENKING45 https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ 8d ago

Indeed. Teaching is a skill. You don't necessarily need to be a master of the subject to teach it. But even if you are master and don't have teaching skill it's pointless.

6

u/I_love_buttts 8d ago

I had a few engineering tutors like this. Incredibly intelligent men who knew vast amounts of knowledge but couldn't teach whatsoever.

12

u/GREENKING45 https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ 8d ago

Funnily enough my brother teaches SS (geography, social sciences and civics fusion) in school but he is a commerce student. ( He teaches his own subjects too but this as extra) he doesn't have much extra knowledge and he knows that. But thing is he manages to explain even the things he doesn't know himself about.

Back in his college days his friends would come asking for help in study of some totally different subject. And my brother would read his textbooks and would clear away his queries. I am not saying he is perfect. ( Because he is a human) but at least he has that skill to teach.

I have an Indian math teacher. Math is the easiest subject right now

143

u/OrnageMadness141 8d ago

I’m seeing a pattern here

182

u/agentPrismarine 8d ago

Yea, India and China have a huge population and ( I think) both have a culture of wanting excellence in math and science ( at least in India, don't know much about China ) that coupled with the huge population explains everything. But there's a sinister side to this culture, suicide rates are high among Indians pursuing engineering and the culture is really toxic ( can say from experience ). Education has become an industry in India which is really bad.

Lol, yesterday in math, the teacher was trying to teach us this thing. But no matter how many times we've asked, we couldn't get a straight answer from the teacher. Always great to find a dedicated teacher. You’re lucky bro

8

u/TheKratex Dirt Is Beautiful 8d ago

I know. But don't worry, all my professional teachers suck. Which is a bad thing considering that I'm graduating next year. I'm at an IT school, but honestly I feel like I don't know much more than avarage people when it comes to programming or Network knowledge.

3

u/otakudayo 8d ago

I didn't learn much programming either, and also went to an IT school. Projects were basic and group-oriented, where the focus was on ensuring everyone got some knowledge as opposed to letting the ones who wanted to program just do their thing and make something decent, learning something in the process. Getting the students who were not into programming to actually carry their own weight was pretty much impossible.

I know some schools are better with this, forcing you to learn how to code. But otherwise, don't worry, try to learn the basics as you go, maybe do some extra programming practice outside of school, and once you get a job, as a fresh grad, the expectation will pretty much be that you know nothing about coding but you know how to learn and you know to ask when you can't figure out out by googling. I feel like if there was a class for googling, it would probably be the most valuable class in an IT course.

I was sitting next to this math Pro in class. When I had a question I would ask him and the teacher would always interrupt us "no talking in class" and I was like "but he is explaining math to me", my class mate did a good job and I would understand his explanations but my teacher didn't care, didn't encourage other students to help others and just forbid us to talk. The teacher was also very bad at explaining things and the best question math teachers asks "what EXACTLY don't you understand?" they won't allow the answer "everything" and I'm not smart enough to say what exactly I don't understand because that would mean that I do understand how it works and what parts it is even made of...

Some of the branches of ALLEN/FIITJEE has horrible results, so keep that in mind. Once you joined, just do what the teachers tell you. This is true cuz it is a huge country + majority students want to pursue careers in engineering + extreme parental pressure + tough exams + high competition + no calculators + hard topics already get taught in junior school

5

u/Emperor2408 8d ago

That's because we aren't allowed to use calculators so we are pretty good in calculation (not everyone). Plus social pressure is still there. Well obviously not everyone is good at math but if you look at the majority then yeah Indians are good at math. Actually we are more good in calculations. Just my opinion

14

u/notsogreatredditor 8d ago

I think we DO more math and higher levels of math than the western counterparts. For example at 10th grade ICSE the math level is crazy compared to 10th grade in US or Europe. But that doesn't necessarily mean we are good at math. We are good at memorizing math problems not solving them. But math should be about solving problems which we don't do
