List of VPNs that allow port-forwarding (2021)

2022 post, comment there: https://old.reddit.com/r/VPNTorrents/comments/s9f36q/list_of_vpns_that_allow_portforwarding_2022/

Here's the updated and absolutely massive list of VPNs that do support port-forwarding. Thanks to previous posts by maxwolfie and brickfrog2. Some new entries taken from "VPN"s subreddit list. These needed updating and it took me hours, for your informed choice!

The choice to pick a trusted one is yours, I did not exclude anybody on any criteria.

IPv6 support is a nice thing to have but not mandatory: in rare cases you may connect to peers instantly via IPv6 but not IPv4: when they're restricted behind NAT and can't take incoming IPv4 connections. Most VPN providers don't advertise it readily and often cite it as "IPv6 leak protection" - in other words, no IPv6 connectivity.

All entries are sorted alphabetically, but there're numbers next to them to pick one at random. Some are not detailed as feature descriptions are often lacking and would require asking support directly. Here I rely on you to fill in the details/propose other VPNs to be added.

Thank you for all your hard work on this. Here's the deets on two popular VPNs you've listed.

Port forwarding in TorGuard: You choose a server, a random port, and a protocol (TCP/UDP) via website. You can choose up to 20 server/port/protocol combinations.

Port forwarding in Mullvad: No server limit exactly. You choose up to five cities via website. They supply the port number for each, all servers in the city have their given port number forwarded.

u/HotshotGT Jul 25 '21

I'd also mention that Mullvad recently changed their policy so that you can't modify port settings if you have a recurring subscription set up.

You need to remove the subscription and pay manually each month or pay for several months up front.

Thanks, updated. Not sure you'll see my comment, but what is the port limit with Mullvad? How many can I port-forward to be used at once with a connection (be it per server or total)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '21

5 ports per account to all locations

u/Sinophil Nov 10 '21

Any tutorial how to point forward on Mullvad? Thanks

u/iqBuster Nov 13 '21

I do not currently use Mullvad. If you can make a concise guide then I will happily link to it.

I have only found 1 that has both port forwarding and split tunneling. Pure VPN. Anyone know of any others? I like being able to exclude a browser and use it for online banking as well as bypassing the VPN for Outlook.

1

u/iqBuster Aug 21 '21

Windscribe and Mullvad afaik too. However due to how Windscribe advertises their app to work with any OpenVPN-based VPN, that's practically all of them? Needs verification.

u/ZaInT Oct 06 '21

If I am not completely misunderstanding what you're trying to do, any provider using the regular OpenVPN- or Wireguard-clients can split tunnel, although you will have to input some routes manually in your conf.

If you need to to it depending on software that won't work unless there are settings in that specific program that controls which interface to use.

2

u/iqBuster Oct 07 '21

Yes and yes. Tho most people actually ask for a per app split tunneling not the route-based.

First off, thanks for sharing such an extensive VPN list!

Just wanted to confirm that PureVPN offers Port Forwarding as an Add-on (just like the Dedicated IP). You can learn more about this feature by following this thread. Incase you have any questions in regards to Port Forwarding or PureVPN in general, feel free to reach us out on our subreddit!

u/iqBuster Aug 23 '21

Thank you, moved to supported list with a link here.

PS: You would want to give a technical guy a chance to proof-read the post (unless already done...)

2

u/PureVPNcom Aug 23 '21

Already done, but thanks!

For windscribe it's like this 'All Pro users have access to Ephemeral port forwarding, meaning you can reserve a single port for 24 hours. If you need it on more permanent basis, or require multiple ports, you need to purchase a Static IP address.'

Great post!

r/Windscribe's ephemeral port forwarding allows Pro users from 7 days, not 24 hours.

For VyprVPN, one can disable the NAT firewall via the account dashboard which opens all (!) ports, which might be quite dangerous. I have used it to seed torrents though, and it works well.

2

u/iqBuster Oct 17 '21

Thanks updated. I still don't entirely understand what exactly VyprVPN is allowing there. They can't allow every user to use up arbitrary ports because that'd mean they need as many IPv4 addresses as are connected to each server.

Example: 10 users connect to the same server and want to host their block game server on port 25565. It's impossible unless the server has 10 different IPs.

I think what it does is permit incoming connections to an already bound port (in use by an user):

User starts server on local 25565 -> server 43567 (random). With this setting enabled, Server 43567 will always redirect incoming connections to local 25565, but you gotta know what this external port is.

If so it shouldn't work with private trackers because the Bittorrent clients have no idea about their external port. Until a port-forwarded peer shares with others in the swarm (PEX) your actual IP:Port address.

u/LG7114Follower Oct 17 '21

Hmm, you're right. Not entirely sure about what's going on with VyprVPN. Here's an interesting stat though: They claim to have 700+ servers and 200,000+ IP addresses, meaning each server has ~285 IPs on an average.

2

u/iqBuster Oct 17 '21

Wow. If so then it sounds plausible but at the same time that's a lot of money for a VPN provider to pay.

We own our own servers and hardware in more than 70 locations around the globe and offer over 300,000 IP addresses.

At the same time 30 simultaneous connections (without the 'up to' wording)? I've gotta try them out. One obstacle though: they do not support crypto payments. And no IPv6. Weird.

1

u/LG7114Follower Oct 19 '21

Don't bother, they're garbage.

They do own their servers, but routing is a nightmare. Also, most of the their locations are virtual. All Asia servers are physically located in Singapore / Hong Kong, all Europe servers in the Netherlands, all US servers in NY or LA.

Besides, their apps are among the worst I've seen. Unresponsive, buggy, and worse, they disconnect without warning without the kill switch kicking in.

I bought 3 year access for 60 USD, but I hardly use it. I just use it sometimes (OpenVPN GUI manual config) when I'm annoyed of captchas. VyprVPN is great for avoiding captchas because of the huge number of IP addresses.

By the way, r/PureVPNcom also claims to have 300k+ IP addresses, but I would recommend you stay away. I found the Windows app to be sub-par and slow, and they gave up user logs in the past.

This is one of the rare golden comments thank you. Actually for my second use purpose a bunch of connections is all I really need reliable or not. Instead of people asking 'hey guysssss whats the best ever vpn anyone?' they would be better off asking for these experiences.

To be blunt PureVPN disgusted me in this very comment section by linking to a borderline false PR post with which they announced port-forwarding to me.* Tho a working feature is a working feature and I don't discriminate against any provider in this post. * See my update below

Some things never change: OEM software is trash. A sad true story

I've always appreciated the great work you and u/daiqo have been putting into educating people about good VPNs. I myself know a thing or two, so your research and hard work really shows.

And yes, manual configs for life! <3

2

u/iqBuster Oct 27 '21

A quick update: My comment above is wrong, PureVPN had corrected their article in the mean time and I didn't notice. It's good now.

:)

2

u/LG7114Follower Oct 28 '21

Not surprising. They've started a massive trust-building / reputation cleansing exercise, although I don't know if there's ever coming back from turning over user logs in the past. Guess we'll wait and see what comes of it.

PrivateVPN are simply lying. They told me most ports are opened outside some to prevent hacking.

I bought the 36 months package. Connected to their dedicated server location and all ports were closed. I tried OpenVPN profile and the windows client. GRC port scan shows all ports stealth or closed. I haven't found a single port that's opened. No configuration on their website. They basically told me that once I connect to one of their dedicated IP servers that they forward all ports to me. Not true.

1

u/iqBuster Jan 04 '22

Thanks for your comments so far! Have you found any single VPN that works for you? To verify that it's not a configuration problem on your end...

2

u/Mountain_Crab7660 Dec 26 '21

BolehVPN is a no go. I tried their 1 day trial after they said all ports are opened going to be opened. But no, most are closed and there is no dedicated option for port forwarding. At least they have a free 1 day trial.

2

u/Mountain_Crab7660 Dec 26 '21

Ghost Path VPN is a no go.

They have an option to turn on port forwarding and they assign a random port for you. Unfortunately it doesn't work! Their customer service is impossible to get a hold of. The CEO is actually doing rep work. Must be a small company.

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

I don't see how this page adds any value. Only three providers listed? Btw Mullvad and IVPN are included in my list.

1

u/SemlohDarb Oct 27 '21

It seems like all the most popular VPNs don't have port-forwarding

1

u/iqBuster Oct 27 '21

Exactly. Like the most popular movies aren't that great either.

1

u/Bombshell342 Dec 04 '21

Wevpn does have port forwarding but no ipv6 . This is the instructions from their website which also shows most of the details I believe you were putting down on here .

In the dashboard menu, click the "Port Forwarding" tab. 2 Select the protocol you want to use with the forwarded port and click ‘’+‘’ You will be attributed a random Port (up to 5 simultaneously). 3 Using one of the WeVPN applications (Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS) connect to one of our Port Forwarded available locations: UK - London - PF; US - Los Angeles - PF; US - New York - PF. 4 Your attributed Port(s) should now be forwarded and ready for use.

2

u/iqBuster Dec 11 '21

Excellent explanation, thank you.

1

u/Bombshell342 Dec 11 '21

Np! Glad to be able to help

1

u/Mountain_Crab7660 Dec 26 '21

Switch VPN is a no go.

Bought the $1 - 3 day trial

They say to connect to one of the supported servers for port forwarding and on the bottom the port number assigned will be listed. I did that and got a port number that said was opened in the client app. Tried scanning that port and got stealth. Port was not opened.

1

u/iqBuster Jan 04 '22

I will link your comment but a Wireshark capture is a better proof of working incoming connections. Have you allowed it in the firewall?

2

u/Mountain_Crab7660 Jan 04 '22

Even though GhostPathVPN didn't have ports I needed opened, it did have some ports opened when I tested. These were things like 443, 22 and a few others. Eventually I found that many of the providers listed here use uPNP to open a port for you. You basically have to have the app you're using support the feature and be able to request the port to be opened. Otherwise it stays closed to the outside. This is how they're able to use a single server and many VPN connections to it. Not the solution I was looking for.

u/305mryy Jan 18 '22

Has anyone tried to connect a router with any of those services? I would like to connect a  GL-AR300M and use port forwarding to a client inside my network
