An Apache pilot saved my life and lives of my squad in Iraq, pinned down and pinched we called for CAS. I don't know what unit they were from but they put the 30mm on target like it was their lives at stake. There is a lot of inter-service trash talk but that day I would've happily sung The Army Song at the top of my lungs. Keep the boys covered for me brother!

Honestly Apache may be cooler than x wing

1k

u/darth_gihilus 13d ago

Nothing is more powerful than a young boys wish... except an Apache helicopter, Apache helicopters have machine guns and missiles, it is an unbelievably impressive complement of weaponry, an absolute death machine

38

u/AcadianMan 13d ago

Apache is awesome, but the cobra sounds pretty cool though. That big womp womp womp

58

u/KindergartenCunt 13d ago

Every time the Chinooks fly over my house I still run outside and watch them like a little kid. Not super often, a few times a year, but I love the way they look and sound.

Same thing with Osprey. Those things are so fucking cool.

Real talk - I seriously love that people like you get to live out something awesome like this. Being a pilot was always a life long dream of mine ever since I watched a New Hope and being fascinated by X-Wings.

Unfortunately having awful eyesight and other things have barred me from living such a dream. But I am genuinely happy that you get to enjoy it. I'll just fly the Apache when it comes out on DCS :P

Stay safe out there! I

74

u/Bigdaddyl0ve 13d ago

Hey brother, had bad vision and an astigmatism all my life. Becoming a pilot was a dream I gave up in my childhood, until I met a pilot overseas with glasses and an astigmatism. I had to have my eyes evaluated three times for the astigmatism, then got in with a waiver! Don’t ever sell yourself short.

19

u/maxdamage4 13d ago

So, realistically speaking, how funny would it be for you to report for work carrying a white cane and fumbling over the controls until the moment of takeoff, whilst speaking loudly about this waiver?

Is there a plan for the Apache to come to DCS? I know that they are currently working on the Mi24 Hind. And did you fly any of the other helicopters in DCS? Is it as much fun as planes?

3

u/kronosthetic 13d ago

Yeah in the trailer for upcoming DCS stuff from a few months ago they had a teaser at the end for the Apache. So it is indeed coming and I could not be more excited.

I obviously don't know anything about your "other things" but the eye sight thing is a urban legend at this point.

There is always general aviation, even if you'd not meet the criteria for a medical certificate, you could most likely go for a drive with an instructor. Even if you weren't able to solo, flying beats not flying any day of the week.

Don't give up on your dream without a fight.

Make them tell you no.

3

u/LunchBoxMercenary 13d ago

Yeah currently I have keratoconus in one my eyes, and even driving now, its a pain in the ass, especially at night. But even though now I'm in my early 30s, I'm hoping that once I get this sorted out, it'll be enough for me to at least go for my pilot's license.

The driving with an instructor thing is something I havent really thought of, but thats definitely awesome to know and something to look in to!

It takes a really sadistic bastard the be like, "Cool! Now point it at those people over there!"

33

u/Nurfur 13d ago

Thanks for the mental image of a mecha-trebuchet railgun... or maybe some kind of orbital slingshot with interplanetary targeting? Developed in the name of destruction but would be so cool to yeet stuff across the galaxy with precision. Feels like the natural progression of ‘wonder if I can hit that lily pad with this rock’

63

u/echo_098 13d ago

"This, recruits, is a 20 kilo ferous slug. Feel the weight! Every five seconds, the main gun of an Everest-class dreadnought accelerates one, to one-point-three percent of lightspeed. It impacts with the force a 38 kiloton bomb. That is three times the yield of the city buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means, Sir Isacc Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space! Now! Serviceman Burnside, what is Newton's First Law?

Sir! An object in motion stays in motion, sir!

No credit for partial answers maggot!

Sir! Unless acted on by an outside force, sir!

Damn straight! I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. Once you fire this hunk of metal, it keeps going 'til it hits something. That can be a ship, or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in 10,000 years! If you pull the trigger on this, you are ruining someones day! Somewhere and sometime! That is why you check your damn targets! That is why you wait 'til the computer gives you a damn firing solution. That is why, Serviceman Chung, we do not 'eyeball it'. This is a weapon of Mass Destruction! You are NOT a cowboy, shooting from the hip!

2

There's can age range where military enlistment doesn't pass the risk vs reward test in most people. It's partially why military service is marketed the way it is. They need young people to keep that particular machine going.

24

u/notataco007 13d ago

Going by the theory of military deterrence - the "cooler" it is, the fewer wars will be fought. So I don't think appreciating military technology and abhorring war are mutually exclusive.

I've had 1 or 2 close calls with power lines hung low over rivers when bombing down them on my Paramotor before.

Thankfully at my speed I was slow enough to just hop over them, but in your apache you must be doing 80+kts through there.

The army apaches used the area where my sister lives to train. It was during the height of the War in Afghanistan. I heard they used to use motorcycles to practice pursuing as that was the vehicle of choice for the taliban.

I remember riding along minding my own business and glancing my rear view mirrors to see an apache following me over a hill. My little 125cc had zero chance and I was swiftly (I assume) shot to death.

Tbf, I doubt my XJ600 that I owned years later would have put up better resistance. That chopper was quick.
