Are you sure? I though that guy was a monkey.

Why is everyone backing away from me?

"Did you get the number of that donkey cart?"

15

u/OccasionallyReddit 3d ago

HELLO FRIEND, DONT WORRY, IT WILL ALL BE OVER... QUITE QUICKLY, WELL... DEPENDING ON HOW BORD HE IS!

1

u/FrakkedRabbit 4d ago

Well, you called an ape a monkey, that's one reason why people are backing away.

14

u/LemurianLemurLad 3d ago

It's a reference to the Discworld novels. If you call The Librarian, an orangutan, a monkey, he will do terrible things to you.

9

u/OccasionallyReddit 3d ago

He tears a lspace portal sized new one in your caboose, which could get quite painful depending on whats using the portal..

The Librarian is one of the best characters

23

u/lighten_up_n_laff 4d ago

I honestly said "what the hell am I reading?" when the orangutan librarian started driving the library through the magical nether.

Guards! Guards! is a crazy fun book

2

u/Dunadan37x 3d ago

I immediately thought of when he was turned into a book. That was one of the best moments.

130

u/omnomnom-oom 4d ago

Wrong river though. He's not standing ON it. Or dissolving.

90

u/BlackHarbourTRPG 4d ago

54

u/omnomnom-oom 4d ago

Yup, the Ankh is quite a river to behold.

18

OOk.

14

u/VapoursAndSpleen 4d ago

Any time there is a fire in the city, you don't need a bucket brigade. Just ball up the water and throw it at the fire.

3

u/Smaptastic 3d ago

It is, as a rule, even more of a river to besmelled.

2

u/thepenguinking84 4d ago

Nor has it caught fire.

Is this a monkey quest reference?

107

u/mobius_sp 4d ago

Ah shit. You don’t use the m-word around the Librarian; he gets a bit upset over it.

74

u/TSMandKitties 4d ago

Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Handedly the best fantasy series ever written. First couple books are ok but as soon as you get immersed, you'll never forget it!

21

u/nocleverusername190 4d ago

Started the series about 2 months ago. Reading in publishing order; started with "The Colour of Magic" and currently on "Wyrd Sisters."

17

u/Leaky_gland 4d ago

Oowee, first time was an experience for me. Started when I was 14. Loved him ever since that first chapter.

9

u/snitchnipple 4d ago

Reading the entire series as one of my goals this year. Currently on Hogfather

6

u/TSMandKitties 4d ago

That's awesome! But take your time and enjoy it!!!

3

u/Verb_Noun_Number 3d ago

Same here. I've finished everything except raising steam.

2

u/thepenguinking84 4d ago

That's my yearly Christmas read, every December I'll always make sure I read it.

35

u/blanksix 4d ago

Ook.

Also, the series is infinitely re-readable, and aside from a few references that you will miss by reading out of publishing order, they're readable in pretty much any order. Pterry was a genius, and we lost an extraordinary mind when he died.

11

u/thepenguinking84 4d ago

GNU Sir pTerry

19

u/Afaflix 4d ago

" Guards Guards " is a good starting point.

15

u/BlackHarbourTRPG 4d ago

The Colour of Magic is a better one

7

u/Leaky_gland 4d ago

Being the first discworld novel I'd agree

4

u/LotzaMozzaParmaKarma 4d ago

I’d say read this one, and if you like it, start from the beginning. You lose a lot not reading them in publishing order, but uh... you really do need something to look forward to in order to get past the Light Fantastic.

I honestly like the first two, but they’re not the same as the rest, and are certainly not great in terms of writing - I’d argue through Mort (which isn’t as good as everyone says), maybe Sourcery, that he’s still really finding his feet and reusing concepts until he finds the right mix.

3

u/Rortugal_McDichael 4d ago

I was told Mort was a good jumping in point, I think because it's a perfect example of the writing and world but not crucial to the overarching story? I don't recall exactly why, but it's next on my fiction reading list. Should I start with Guards Guards or Colour of Magic or some other book?

2

u/FredTheFBIGuy 3d ago

Start with Colour of Magic, then Light Fantastic.

The orangutans (also spelled orang-utan, orangutang, or orang-utang) are three extant species of great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia. Orangutans are the most arboreal of the great apes and spend most of their time in trees. They are among the most intelligent primates; they use a variety of sophisticated tools and construct elaborate sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. Some adult male orangutans develop flaps of fatty tissue on both sides of their face - known as flanges - which develop when they're fully mature, at around 30 years old. They can live to be 50 years old.

Adding to the above informative comment: Orangutans cannot swim. There are also crocs as long as 15’ in the rivers. We got to see them in Borneo in 2019. The latest projects involve making rope bridges over the rivers so that they can get to other fragmented forests (areas are heavily forested and turned to palm oil plantations). This helps them find food and in mating. Not sure how to add photos or video (newer to Reddit) but if someone tells me how, I can share pics of the bridges the locals built for these great apes.

30

u/ar0nic 4d ago

So cool fun fact, because of the large amount of displaced and orphaned orangutans (sad) researchers are finding out that it's not so much as they cannot swim as much as they don't swim. An orangutan in its natural environment typically will spend most of its life in the trees and are typically not very social. But due to deforestation there are so many rehabbed orangutans that live in giant rehab centers and researchers are finding that these apes are learning to do many things that a typical orangutan would not. One of those is how they are navigating water ways from using sticks and branches to pole vault and as rafts to wading thru water ways above thier head. It's not unprecedented to think that should these apes continue to thrive in larger social settings than they are normally used to that more and more atypical behavior will be seen.

Another misconception is that chimps cannot swim due to having no fat they just sink. We know this is not true, chimps don't swim because both they have never learned and the types of water predators they exist in thier natural environments. Neat fun facts for ya.

3

u/BossNegative1060 4d ago

After playing the isle and seeing someone get eaten by a croc I don’t know I’d be able to live as a wild animal

17

u/r777rr 4d ago

You would either have to make your own post in a similar subreddit(you totally should) or you would have to upload your images to an image hosting site and share the links here(this would be appreciated too, but less people may see)

13

u/HerbieVerstinx 4d ago

I’d look at those pics.

You gotta upload the pics to a hosting site (Flickr, imgur) and then paste the links on reddit.

Orangutans are so sweet. If you have Disney+ I would highly recommend the orangutan show where they go to orangutan school and learn how to share and play. It’s amazing. They’re so nice to each other and arent ass holes like chimpanzees.

9

u/hilarymeggin 4d ago

I wish I had an orangutan friend! She could carry me around in trees and it would be almost like I didn't have weak little T-rex arms. I would be her best friends and do any math problems she needed solving.

12

u/hilarymeggin 4d ago

At the National Zoo in Washington DC, the orangutans can climb out of their enclosures on a network of overhead ropes. It's really cool. When my daughter was two, I pointed one out to her.

"Look at the orangutan up on those wires!"

2yo: "Is it next to the fury brown man??"

5

u/cloudyoutside 4d ago

Haha she got the name right since orangutan means forest person. They’re so sweet and you can see the love in their eyes

5

u/vestigial66 3d ago

We call it the O-Line. All the orang utans travel expect Lucy because Lucy only does what she wants to when she wants to do it. The best thing is to see toddler Redd somersaulting upside on the lower wire and mom Batang chasing after him. The large male Kiko likes to put on a brief show of brachiating right at the end of his trip to either end just to wow the humans.

5

u/demonachizer 4d ago

Orangutans fuck with my head in a way that no other animal does. I visited the national zoo some years back and there was this huge (HUGE) male and the way he moved so effortlessly despite his size and the way he seemingly glided from place to place due to his crazy dreadlocks hiding a lot of his movement was otherworldly. I stood there and watched the dude doing his thing for a couple of hours transfixed by it. They are super super cool.

5

u/vestigial66 3d ago

Probably Kiko but could've been Kyle. It would depend on how many years ago because Kyle didn't get his cheekpads in for quite awhile. Kiko is a lovely kind of dopey fellow who spends most of his time with his half-sister Iris. He is a hybrid. He does have incredible long hair and is quite graceful. Kyle, on the other hand is younger and full Bornean. He is the father of our toddler Redd. He had far less hair for a long time but then he finally got his long hair and cheekpads. He loves to display and long-call around Kiko, who often ignores the ruckus but sometime saunters out to give as good as he is getting.

5

u/demonachizer 3d ago edited 3d ago

This was long enough ago that I think it could have also been Junior. I think it was around 2005.

Oh shit I am inferring from your message that you work there. Is there anywhere I could find photos of Junior? I have seen Kiko and it could have been him I think but I would love to see the escape artist himself.
