Swann and Altroz no more, it's Swann and Safari now.

It's an entire Home theatre setup on WHEELS - Swann probably .

Also Punjab play 5 games at the Chinnaswamy stadium Bangalore, Gayle Storm Returns in Bangalore.

144

u/nouseridavailable Punjab Mar 07 '21

Punjab is proxy home team in Bangalore. Gayle, Mayank, Rahul, Sarfaraz, Mandeep were RCB players for more than couple of years and Kumble is from Karnataka.

u/hoshgal2 Mar 07 '21

Laughs in Meredith, Shami & Richardson

81

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Meredith is from Bangalore. TIL.

Yeah but I'm not sure if that's the Best venue for Punjab , Short boundaries don't suit them .

Long boundaries are better because Gayle, Pooran can clear long boundaries with ease

15

u/THELORDREGENT Karnataka Mar 07 '21

Excellent

55

u/Percybhowal Kolkata Knight Riders Mar 07 '21

I read somewhere that the IPL GC prefers to make the opening match in such a way that two of Dhoni, Rohit, and Virat get to play on the same day. Helps with the TRP.

31

u/Zestyclose-Leader372 India Mar 07 '21

Nope. In 2017, it was Virat vs Warner. It is generally those who have competed in the finals. However this trend went off since 2019.

10

u/ipdsj Nepal Mar 07 '21

It is generally those who have competed in the finals.

Actually not. Until 2014-15, all the opening matches involved either Mumbai or Kolkata. This then was changed to the previous season's finalists.

43

u/PranayNighukar Mumbai Indians Mar 07 '21

Venue wise distribution of games

  • Mumbai (10) - CSK and RR 5 each, PBKS and DC 3 each, KKR and RCB 2 each. MI SRH none
  • Chennai (10) - MI and SRH 5 each, KKR and RCB 3 each, PBKS and DC 2 each. CSK RR none
  • Ahmedabad (8 + qualifiers) - PBKS RCB DC KKR 4 each
  • Delhi (8) - MI RR CSK SRH 4 each
  • Kolkata (10) - RCB and DC 5 each, SRH and RR 3 each, MI and CSK 2 each, PBKS and KKR none
  • Bangalore (10) - PBKS and KKR 5 each, MI and CSK 3 each, SRH and RR 2 each, RCB and DC none

Mumbai Bangalore Kolkata are expected to be high scoring venues, Chennai and Delhi low scoring, whole Ahmedabad is yet to be tested (we will get to know in the next week)

Rashid playing 9 games combined in Delhi and Chennai, and Gayle playing 8 games combined at Mumbai and Bangalore is something to look forward to. CSK will capitalise in the Delhi phase, while MI will capitalise in the last 5 matches after playing 9 games at low scoring venues initially

25

u/harshacc Surrey Mar 07 '21

That is gonna hurt CSK spin bowling a lot if they dont play in Chepauk. The batsmen wont mind

4

u/abhi8192 Delhi Daredevils Mar 07 '21

Out of 14, DC would play 8 on grounds where pitch would suit their style of play(Mumbai and Kolkata), Chennai would be a test for batsmen and I don't know what to expect of Motera.

2

u/BoringPitch414 Bosnia and Herzegovina Mar 07 '21

DC’s record in Kolkata is terrible so I’m a bit worried about playing 5 games there.

3

u/abhi8192 Delhi Daredevils Mar 07 '21

Kolkata pitch used to be spinner friendly and Delhi used to be shit. Now a days Delhi is a good team and Kolkata's pitch has good pace and bounce. Of course its Delhi, so they can very well go on to lose all 5 games but that would mostly be their own failure and not because the pitch didn't suit their style of play.

So, no home disadvantage for RCB. Yess.

51

u/pierrs Royal Challengers Bangalore Mar 07 '21

This is actually a blessing in disguise for RCB. Bigger grounds for spinners and road negation which will allow RCB to outbat others.

9

u/T-MosWestside Royal Challengers Bangalore Mar 07 '21

That's actually good but I'm still disappointed that I won't be able to see RCB play. I literally JUST moved to Bangalore and was hoping to see them at Chinnaswamy.

u/AspectKracken Bengal Mar 07 '21

SRH with 9 games in Chennai and Delhi. Come on SRH its time to unleash Rashid-Mujeeb at the Kotla and Chepauk.

37

u/jadon_sancho Mar 07 '21

Yes lmao ,it suits them

52

u/AspectKracken Bengal Mar 07 '21

Yup,SRH can shithouse their way to 160 and then allow Rashid-Mujeeb(if they can find a spot for him or else Nabi)-Natarajan-Bhuvi-Sandeep(or Sid Kaul) to take over. Fuck I think SRH has a decent chance of qualifying again this year coz the conditions support them. They became better last year towards the fag end of the tourney when the pitches had turned slow.

10

u/bhukkhad Mumbai Indians Mar 07 '21

They just need some good batting apart from top 3. Everything else is sorted.

24

u/AspectKracken Bengal Mar 07 '21

Top 4 tbh,Williamson plays 4. SRH has that hole at 5,6,7 but this time we will have Mitch Marsh(fingers crossed he doesnt break down) who is a very very solid no.6 or even Nabi who is a world class T20 finisher. Fingers crossed Vijay Shankar is fit and ready,he was just about finding his knick in the last IPL,won the game vs RR,was guiding the chase vs KXIP until a hit to his head fucked him up,his figures read 20/1(4),1/15(3) and 1/11(1.5) before an injury meant everything came crashing down. That leaves one spot to be filled- Kedar Jadhav, Abdul Samad,Priyam Garg,Virat Singh,Abhishek Sharma are the options. Samad looks very solid,Abhishek played the dasher role beautifully for Punjab up top and Virat Singh outshines Ishan Kishan when playing together. Am hopeful that the youngsters would return wiser to the team and we would be better this year lol.

6

u/abhi8192 Delhi Daredevils Mar 07 '21

If Williamson play at 4 and you want to unleash Rashid Mujeeb duo on the opposition, then there is no place for Mitch or Nabi.

3

u/AspectKracken Bengal Mar 07 '21

Yup,I was just talking about possible combos. I think Warney, Rashid,Kanos and Nabi would be the first choice 4 overseas. This way we dont compromise much with our bowling(Nabi is a wonderful T20 bowler, career ER less than 7 and will form a superb spin duo with Rashid, playing Marsh probably makes our bowling a bit weak) while also making sure we have a world class no.6 ready(Nabi has a career SR of 142,playing Holder maybe makes our batting a bit weak). If some games, the management thinks the pitch is too spin friendly, Nabi might make way for Mujeeb. Its tough to accommodate Nabi-Rashid-Mujeeb together.

114

u/ipindrama Australia Mar 07 '21

Honestly, really glad RCB doesn't have to play at Bangalore. Their advantage of having good batsmen gets nullified on that road.

The last two times they made the playoffs, was when they were able to outbat the opposition.

In 2016 Kohli and AB were on God mode, so they just outscored everyone even on those roads, and in 2020 the wickets were much tougher than the Chinnaswamy.

4 of their 7 wins last season were them out batting the opposition.

31

u/cxletron India Mar 07 '21

True , they r a team who will love this considering their death bowling woes

Joff gonna rip the other teams apart 😈

25

u/ssr3fn Kolkata Knight Riders Mar 07 '21

Not a fan of this schedule. The final 2 days should have 2 double headers where each team plays their final game. KKR and SRH will have played their last game before CSK and DC play their 13th game. Huge advantage for CSK and DC. Also double headers in the same venue aren't good. It is definitely possible for an afternoon game to finish after 7:30 for super over or whatever reason.

12

u/_jadoo_ Mumbai Indians Mar 07 '21

Incresed numbers of double headers, this year are because BCCI want to conclude the IPL as early as possible so that the players get enough rest and preparation time for WTC final.

7

u/ssr3fn Kolkata Knight Riders Mar 07 '21

I don't mind increased double headers. I don't want double headers at the same venue. However, this season is actually longer than usual seasons. Normally there are 48 match days with 3 rest days whereas this year there will be 49 match days along with 3 rest days.

1

u/nut_nut_november Mumbai Indians Mar 07 '21

I mean it's probably due to covid that matches are at the same ground

2

u/KelvinRkrab Delhi Capitals Mar 07 '21

It's just one extra double header if I am not wrong. It's ending just 1 day less than the last IPL. What is everyone on about?

5

u/_jadoo_ Mumbai Indians Mar 07 '21

They were waiting for WTC final status. Had India not made the finals, it would've been a week longer than usual.

None of the players in this IPL have ever been in contention to be selected in the Netherlands, Namibia, or Nepal international squads. Further, none of the Indian players selected have ever been selected to play in a top overseas T20 league like the BBL or CPL.

This suggests that the IPL is of very low quality, comparable in standard to the Ugandan/Malaysian 5th division. I’m not sure why it is getting so much publicity.

it is very fair decision by bcci here ... but it totally fucks up csk's plans as there is no chepauk for them

7

u/cxletron India Mar 07 '21

Yup. They were expecting Chepauk for sure seeinh their buys

4

u/idhunammaCSKda Chennai Super Kings Mar 07 '21

Pacer options are still not that bad though. Ngidi, Hazlewood, Chahar and Thakur are pretty decent bowling options and if need be CSK have enough Indian batting depth to play all 4 together.

3

u/cxletron India Mar 07 '21

Yup josh could be very handy on slowish tracks imo....Chahar and Thakur are sure starters.

11

u/ipindrama Australia Mar 07 '21

They're playing in Delhi, which is pretty much the same as chepauk.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Only 4 matches in Delhi.

8

u/Rubberducky1239 Delhi Capitals Mar 07 '21

Actually a pretty smart solution, doubt any team will have a problem with this schedule. Would have loved the first match to be MI vs DC but I guess this is also fine

u/uravggstudent ICC Mar 07 '21 edited Mar 07 '21

MI v DC won't be beneficial for viewing numbers on opening day given that DC's fanbase is significantly lesser than the two.

This is the reason why CSK, MI and RCB keep on playing the first game.

  • 2018: MI v CSK
  • 2019: CSK v RCB
  • 2020: MI v CSK
  • 2021*: MI v RCB

u/Rubberducky1239 Delhi Capitals Mar 07 '21

Yeah makes a lot of sense. Btw looking forward to the match on the 10th with you guys (iirc you are a csk fan)

5

u/uravggstudent ICC Mar 07 '21

Why is your flair RCB though?

Anyways, we got schooled by DC last year(literally the first time in the history of the IPL). I just hope we make it to the playoffs this time around(nothing more). Anyways, DC looking even more strong this year.

u/Rubberducky1239 Delhi Capitals Mar 07 '21

Lost a flair bet when Punter decided not to bid on Maxi. It was a Daredevilesque season for you guys, you will surely come back stronger. Just hope it is not against us:)

6

u/uravggstudent ICC Mar 07 '21

Haha lol. Axar cunting us for three sixes at Sharjah is possibly my worst memory from last season lol

7

u/Rubberducky1239 Delhi Capitals Mar 07 '21

That was honestly quite surprising, the fact we managed to take it that close even after Dhawan scoring a 100 showed how out of form our batting unit as a whole was. My worst memory from the 2019 IPL was CSK knocking us out after we finally won a knockout game.

Yes, I remember we beat ya'll 3 times that year. Good times lol

I used to think the opening matches usually happen between the defending champions and the 4th placed team in the previous season. Guess that's not the case.

It's nice that all matches will take place in neutral venues.

4

u/uravggstudent ICC Mar 07 '21

CSK playing quite few games in Delhi. It suits their play style a bit more given the sluggishness of that pitch.

Excited for this season.

Meanwhile, mahela jayawardene has sent a pdf copy of 'how to bowl off spin and other types of spin deliveries' to every single squad member of MI.

Why Ahmedabad? I am trying to make sense of it. Why not Hyderabad?

I don’t mind Hyderabad being excluded. It’s completely reasonable if no team plays a home game and there are no crowds. This way the city doesn’t miss out on anything.

u/iphone-se- Royal Challengers Bangalore Mar 07 '21

Anyone’s got a pdf of the schedule?

u/rishmanisation Mumbai Indians Mar 07 '21

Happy we didn't splurge on that third overseas quick in hindsight! Piyush and Chahar/Jayant gonna play a huge role early on.

Would have been nice to get more games in Kolkata or something but not too fussed otherwise. Think we have the batting to succeed in any conditions. Interested to see how the spinners hold up though.

I'm just glad the "bigger franchises" a.k.a MI and CSK weren't able to pull some strings and get home games. Very fair to have only neutral games for all teams.

3

u/cxletron India Mar 07 '21

No home advantage...Guess that's fair. Will hurt teams like csk who have many spinners and may benefit Rcb coz no batting paradise of blore..(context Death bowling )

3

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Axar and Ashwin in Delhi and Chennai. DC eating good.

CSK playing 0 games in Chennai. The last hope of CSK fans is gone.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

I don't understand why BCCI thought not allowing the IPL teams to play in their home ground will be a good idea

3

u/nut_nut_november Mumbai Indians Mar 07 '21

Hyderabad, Punjab, Rajasthan fans will complain

3

u/HudsonStrangler India Mar 07 '21
  1. Because crowds are anyway not allowed at many places

  2. Requires less bubbles... Right now only 2 venues will be active at a time.. Chennai/Mumbai... Then Delhi/Ahmedabad then Kolkata/BLR

  3. It would be unfair on teams like Rajasthan etc whose home grounds aren't part of the ones selected so to make it fair we would have to play equal number of games at all 8 grounds

  4. Allows for flexibility.. If one place gets more cases just move the fixtures with out worrying about who's losing their home game etc etc
